ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM 2011

Channel Swim 2011

After 12hrs 35mins, I’m delighted to confirm the team and I completed the 45km English Channel swim to France on Saturday afternoon .  Thanks to those who have very kindly shown an interest and been extremely generous by donating into the Puffin Magic Foundation for my friend James Gribble. Thank you for your support.

Pictures say a 1,000 words – so feel free to have a look at the photo album.

It was a classic adventure in the world’s busiest shipping lane (freezing cold).  We started at 3am in darkness and never looked back!  Phew – what a day!

DETAILS OF THE SWIM & CHARITY
The relay team consists of Luke Dillon (AUST/GBR), Jason Robinson (AUST), Randall Ingber (USA), Jonathan Bramley (GBR) and Edward Montgomery (AUST). The team will embark on the 21mile (35km) journey at dawn on the best weather day between 19-25th July. We see this 12-14hr swim as a small sacrifice to help a great friend in need and solid cause.

Why are we doing it?

PUFFIN MAGIC FOUNDATION CHARITY – FOR JAMES GRIBBLE
In November 2008, our mate James Gribble had a freak accident while travelling in Africa. It resulted in severe spinal damage, leaving him a quadriplegic. Australians Swimming English Channel for Fundraising

To all our supporters...

It's off until next year………. we didn't even get to start !

With great disappointment, I write to confirm our team has been unable to attempt a crossing of the Channel in 2010.  Although the scheduled tide was okay, the Skipper from our support boat believed the wind conditions were too strong (both 20 August & 16 September) rendering the sea unsafe to swim.

Whilst its humbling being at the mercy of mother nature, it is grossly frustrating knowing that we came so close, yet remain so far from achieving our goal. An underwhelming anti-climax !

The team may be down, but we're not out !! We'll be attempting again in July 2011. Hours of training in the freezing cold lakes, pools, rivers and coast of magnificent England will start in March.

Despite not delivering on our commitment this year, we kindly ask that all generous Puffin Magic Foundation (PMF) donations be carried forward into 2011.

On behalf of the team and James Gribble - I thank you all for your support. Fingers crossed for better conditions!

The Mean Machine (Luke)

For those in London - please join us at the PMF 'Black Tie Ball' on 1 October. Tickets sold here  http://www.australianbusiness.co.uk/eventdetail.aspx?eid=41

LATEST UPDATE:  HOPEFULLY SEPTEMBER 16/17 IN COLD WATERS!

WEATHER DELAY
Unfortunately, due to unseasonably changeable weather conditions, the Team have been unable to attempt our scheduled crossing on this current low tide.

Arrangements have been made with the Skipper of our support boat to attempt on either 16 or 17 September.  As a consequence, the sea will be colder and we'll most probably start and end the swim in the dark given the reduced hours of light.

Its worth noting that there have only been 600 successful attempts of crossing the Channel.
So, even though the wind gods mock us, we shall be patient and treat Mother Nature with the respect she deserves.

On behalf of the team and James (PMF), I thank you for the overwhelming amount of support !!

A group of Australian mates based in London (& one token Pommy) are attempting to swim the English Channel on 17 August 2010 (subject to tides) to help raise funds for their friend.

The relay team consists of Luke Dillon (Captain), Jason Robinson, Rob Buckley, Marty Walsh & Jonathan Bramley (GBR).

The team will embark on the 21mile (34km) journey at dawn. We see this 12hr swim as a small sacrifice to help a great friend in need.

Official English Channel crossing rules do not permit the use of protective shark cages or wetsuits, so only fluro lime green Speedo’s entitled ‘Budgie Smugglers’ will be worn in the strong currents and chilling 16 degree sea. Oh joy !
